On October 20, Amar Pandya, Portfolio Manager at Pender, moderated Canada Rearms: The Future of Defence, Industry and Investment, a CFA Society Vancouver panel at The Vancouver Club.

The discussion focused on how Canada will meet the need of defence spending and the role of investing in scaling our domestic supply chain.

Amar, who focuses on event-driven and special situations investing and is Co-Chair of the CFA Society Vancouver Programs Committee, guided the discussion from policy to portfolios.

The panel brought together different perspectives from venture capital, academia and military command to discuss Canada’s defence strategy:

  • Glenn Cowan, Managing Director and Head of Defence & Security Investing at ONE9, a retired special operations officer who founded the firm in 2013
  • Alexander Moens, Director of the NATO Field School and Professor at Simon Fraser University, specializing in Euro-Atlantic security and defence
  • Retired Vice-Admiral Mark Norman, former Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy

Together they explored three themes:

  1. Canada's emerging priorities: which capabilities are most urgent as security threats and alliances shift
  2. The domestic defence sector: how procurement policy, international partnerships and supply chains create opportunities and constraints
  3. What it means for markets: the implications for companies, capital markets and investors

Special Situations Investing

Large, policy-driven spending shifts can reshape entire sectors. Procurement timelines, supply chain capacity and partner commitments will all influence how companies and capital markets are affected. That’s where Amar’s investment objective comes in: identifying catalysts, policy shifts and mispriced opportunities is core to his event-driven and special situations strategy.
