On April 13, Pender's Laura Baker <\/a>met with students from\u00a0<\/span>UBC Sauder\u2019s SWIFT (Sauder Women+ in Finance Training) programme<\/span><\/a>, continuing her longstanding involvement with the initiative since its\u00a0inception\u00a0in\u00a02023.\u00a0SWIFT, delivered in partnership with the UBC Portfolio Management Foundation, is designed to expand access to high\u00a0quality finance training and support a more inclusive pipeline of talent entering the industry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the session, Laura shared insights from her career journey, reflecting on her experience across equity sales and research roles spanning multiple firms and sectors. She also provided an overview of Pender\u2019s bottom-up investment philosophy, with a focus on small-cap investing,\u00a0providing\u00a0students\u00a0with\u00a0a practical perspective on how fundamental analysis is applied in real\u00a0world portfolio management.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The discussion extended to the students\u2019 own work, with Laura providing detailed feedback on their weekly reports. Her perspectives on developing differentiated market views, strengthening investment theses, and applying rigorous analytical thinking were especially well received.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Programmes like SWIFT combine academic rigour with hands\u00a0on experience in capital markets,\u00a0they also provide\u00a0mentorship and industry engagement. By fostering\u00a0a strong sense\u00a0of community and creating pathways into finance careers, initiatives like this play\u00a0an important role\u00a0in broadening participation and supporting the next generation of investment professionals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
